LIMA Lima, the capital of modern Peru, -known in colonial times as "The City of Kings"-is more than just a gateway to Peru´s fascinating Andes mountains and Amazon basin. CUSCO Cusco is absolutely full of Inca architecture. The Spanish colonists built a new city on top of the one they found there. PARACAS Paracas Natural Reserve is located three hours heading south from Lima and is home to one of the driest deserts in the world. LORETO Iquitos, capital of Loreto, is isolated from the rest of the world by the impassable rainforest, crossed by the longest and biggest river in the world, the Amazon. TRUJILLO The city of Trujillo, with its sober colonial air, was founded by the Spaniards in 1534 in an arearnchosen by the Mochica and Chimu cultures for their great cities and ceremonial centres. MANU The Manu National Park (1,716,295 hectares), located in the departments of Cusco and Madre de Dios, protects more than 800 bird species, 200 species of mammals, gigantic trees, as well as being home to indigenous communities.
