Unlock the mysteries of the country´s greatest archaeological treasures. Peru with its rugged and varied geography has always been host to innumerable cultures which have coexisted or fought, creating a cultural space that today contains evidence of centuries of human presence. All of it among nature at its most diverse. Nature on the north coast of Peru has all the wealth of the tropics: a hot climate all year round, beaches with simple accommodation which harmonizes with the quality of the natural resources. Paucartambo
Paucartambo
The village of Paucartambo, 68 miles from the city of Cusco, has charms of its own as well as a great fiesta: the Virgin of Carmen. This celebration takes place between the 15th and 18th of July and has its roots in colonial times, as well as being a manifestation of religious faith and a riot of colorful dances and music.
Caral
Caral
The oldest city in the Americas: Caral, five thousand years of history, contemporaneous with Babylon or China in its ancient greatness. To visit Caral is to understand the complexity of a culture that has turned academic thinking upside down, as it is evidence of a state existing in the pre-ceramic era. In the middle of the desert, Caral appears as if in a dream.
Kuelap
Kuelap
In the cloud forests of eastern Peru some six hundred years ago lived a community of warriors, scattered but interlinked in a form of federation - the Chachapoya, the culture that put up perhaps the fiercest resistance to the expansion of the Inca empire. Archaeological remains of the Chachapoya culture exist, but it is difficult to say how many there are. All are found in forests that are full of mystery.
Cajamarca
Cajamarca
It was here where the fate of the Inca empire was sealed, when Pizarro -the conquistador- confronted, defeated and executed Inca Atahualpa. This area has always had local cultures withrndifferent degrees of political, religious and military development. A centre of the mining industry and important for its cattle, Cajamarca´s centre is a splendid city with fine town houses and baroque churches. The countryside, the thermal baths and archaeological remains are surroundings that make Cajamarca an unexpected but unforgettable destination.
